Zimbabwe Prime Minister Ends Boycott

Morgan Tsvangirai, Zimbabwe's prime minister, boycotted the unity government three weeks ago, but has gone back to work in the country's unity cabinet to try to work out difficulties. Tsvangirai had walked out because, he said, the country's president, Robert Mugabe, had not implemented a power-sharing deal they had worked out after a disputed election, and had jailed members of the MDC opposition, most notably deputy agricultural minister Roy Bennett.

US calls for world community to put pressure on Mugabe

Morgan Tsvangirai, Prime Minister of Zimbabwe and leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) opposition party, announced Friday that he would suspend cabinet meetings. Al Jazeera reported that Tzvangiriai's choice for deputy agricultural minister Roy Bennett was rearrested on long-discredited terrorism charges. President Robert Mugabe's Zanu-PF and the MDC agreed on a power-sharing deal after disputed elections this February, but actions by Mugabe threaten to tear apart the unity government.

Ian Kelly, a US State Department spokesman, said that president Mugabe hasn't show commitment to democratic reform and political openness, nor has Mugabe committed to the power-sharing deal he had agreed upon. The US called on the world community to put pressure on Mugabe to implement the unity agreement. Botswana president Ian Khama warned that the Zimbabwean government is on the verge of collapse.
